Inspired by Enguerrand Quarton's Coronation of the Virgin altarpiece, Art Brut painter Roger Lorance's vivid and abundant works are inhabited by demons, divinities and other colorful hallucinations.
Born in Héricourt in Haute-Saône, France, painter and poet Roger Lorance moved to Villeneuve lez Avignon with his parents in 1947, after spending a few years in Orange and a spell in Germany. There, he discovered Enguerrand Carton's Coronation of the Virgin at the Musée Pierre-de-Luxembourg: his desire to paint was born.
In his lively, colorful works, demons, divinities and alcohol-induced hallucinations intertwine.
