At the Chartreuse de Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc presents *Le Grand Fleuve*, an exhibition where sound becomes a living substance. In the *bugade* (a laundry room, but also a place of care and forced confinement), the eye is first drawn to the space itself. The walls, the volumes, the charred prison door, left there, striking. The architecture already bears layers of history, physical, visible, scar-like traces. It is from this point that Abonnenc’s work unfolds. For over twenty years, the artist has been exploring the legacies of colonialism, diasporic memories, and forms of creolization. Here, he extends this research through a unique sonic immersion, fueled by recordings made at the very heart of the site: voices, echoes, breaths, acoustic traces. With singer Bruno Bonhoure, he records fragments in the bugade and in other spaces of the Chartreuse, such as the chapter house, turning the site into a true sounding board, an amplifier.
